Two national universities in Hanoi and HCMC have broken into the Quacquarelli Symonds top 1,000 rankings for 2022.

The Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are both placed in the 801-1,000 band in the rankings compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British firm specializing in overseas education.

This marks the fourth consecutive year the two have made it into the top 1,000.

Their 2022 rankings remain unchanged compared to the 2021 result but against last year and 2019, the HCMC university had dropped from rank 701-750.

Released on Wednesday, QS University World Ranking 2022, the eighteenth edition of the annual ranking, is the largest ever as it features 1,300 universities from 93 countries and territories.

Vietnam has two other schools on the list. Ton Duc Thang University in HCMC reached the 1,001-1,200 band, the same position it achieved in 2020. Last year, it did not make it into the rankings.

The other school is the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, which stayed in the 1,201+ band, falling 200 rankings compared to 2021.

QS stated on its website each institution had been assessed according to six key metrics of academic reputation (40 percent), employer reputation (10 percent), faculty/student ratio (20 percent), citations per faculty (20 percent), international faculty ratio and international student ratio (10 percent each).

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues to stand atop the 2022 rankings, a position it has secured four years in a row.

Harvard University in the U.S. stands in fifth, falling out of the top three compared to the 2021 result and marking its lowest-ever ranking. The University of Oxford in the U.K. rose from fifth place to second while the University of Cambridge (U.K.) and Stanford University (U.S.) share the third position.

In Asia, the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, also in Singapore, achieve the highest rank, placing 11th and 12th.

They are followed by Tsinghua University and Peking University in China in 17th and 18th spots.
