HCMC coronavirus tally in new wave tops 8,000
19 other cases were recorded in Long An, 13 in Quang Ngai, six in Bac Ninh, four in Phu Yen, three each in Tra Vinh and Bac Giang, two in Nghe An and one each in Ca Mau, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Dak Lak.
In HCMC, 244 cases have been contained in quarantine and locked down areas, while 103 others are being contact traced. Within 24 hours, the number of local infections in the southern city increased by 888, from 7,114 cases as of Tuesday noon.
Eight cases in Long An, a HCMC's neighbor, are close contact cases, and 11 returned from HCMC.
The cases in the central province of Quang Ngai are contained within locked down areas.
Two cases in the northern province of Bac Ninh are close contact cases, and three are linked to the Que Vo industrial park in the eponymous district.
All the cases in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Ca Mau, Dak Lak returned from HCMC. With Wednesday's tally, the southernmost Ca Mau Province became the 56th locality to be hit by the fourth coronavirus wave.
All the cases in Phu Yen, Tra Vinh, Bac Giang and Nghe An are associated with existing Covid-19 patients.
Since the new wave started on April 27, 19,238 local cases have been recorded in 56 cities and provinces, with HCMC accounting for the most infections, followed by Bac Giang at 5,676 cases.
