According to the patients relatives, 2 weeks ago the patient ate fish without knowing she had swallowed a bone. Only until 4 days before that she has lower abdomen pains. She had gotten diagnosed to have object in digestion tract. Thinking that fish bone is digestible, she didn't ask for surgery but instead having outside treatment.

On 25th August, the pain gets worse and becomes more frequent, she was brought into E Hospital for emergency. The patient was given diagnosis and medical projection with doctors diagnosed her intestine got ruptured by sharp object. She was given emergency operation surgery.

Prof, Dr Nguyen Quoc Dat who did the surgery said that when performing endoscopy, they found out a 4cm fish bone piercing the ileum. The puncture was blocked by fatty lipids. The puncture hole was 5 mm in diameter with thick infection walls. The doctors have removed the bone, cleaned and sew the wound completely.

Dr Dat said that this was a lucky case because the object is covered so there wasn't any gastric acid  spillage. Doctors have examined the other organs and there was no injury cause by the object. It's worth noting that all the prcedures have been carefully done to lessen injury and hospitalized period.

The danger of swallowing fish bone is that it could get stuck anywhere in the digestive system and causing dangerous symptoms. If it's stuck in the throat area, it can be picked out with endoscope and pick out easily. In the case of bone going through the throat it can end up in the lower part of the digestive system like the esophagus, stomach, intestine,....

If the bone puncture the esophagus, it would cause mediastinal abscess which has an extremely high fatality rate. If fish bone puncture the stomach or intestine there would be severe infection and it could even escape out of the stomach and damage other organs. Those are bad symptoms and usually required to have surgery fast, if not diagnosed and treated in time can be fatal.

To avoid such symptoms, Dr Dat warned that eating food with bones like fish and chicken should be chewed carefully and sort the bone out carefully. If they accidentally swallow a bone, don't try to keep swallowing or self remove the bone and instead should go to a hospital quickly to avoid having the bone going further down the digestive system and causing punctures. In the case of punctured organ immediate diagnosis and surgery is necessary
