Herbert screws
Dr Nam of 108 Military Hospital, who directly performed the surgery, shared that due to how young the patient is, they tried whatever they could to help him recover motor function in the future.
The doctors used Herbert screws to lock the broken bone in place and tighten both side of the fracture to help the patient soon recover and stabilize. Now he is able to stretch, close and flip his hand up and down easily and is discharged from the hospital.
Dr Nam said that in complicated wrist injury when you can't put the bone back in or secure it with screws, the doctors will have to remove the broken bone, thus risk causing the patient to lose motor function stability. That could lead to abnormal difficulty when performing normal movement like stretch or turn.
According to Dr Nam, the wrist bone may be small but it's an independent joint that's very important for the wrist that allows for motor functions. In many injury cases or accidents, patients are usually damaged in that area.
With light injury, doctors usually secure and combine the bones or place them back using medical tools. However in serious cases where the bone is fractured too much. Back then the only option was to remove all the fragments to prevent further injury.
But now, 108 Military Hospital has used a brand new technique with Herbert screw to secure the fracture and shorten the treatment and recovery time. Each Herbert screw operaions only take 20 minutes.
