Four people in Da Nang have died due to flooding that submerged homes in the entire city from Friday night, and caused blackouts to over 200,000 families.

Phan Van Dung, deputy director of the municipal police department, on Saturday said the four victims were a student who drowned on Me Suot Street in Lien Chieu District; a 58-year-old man who drowned while going fishing; a woman who drowned at her home on Trung Nu Vuong Street in Hai Chau District; and a police officer who died due to a traffic accident.

Impacts of Storm Son Ca, which devolved into a tropical depression offshore Friday night, was especially severe in Da Nang, with rain levels recorded from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday reaching up to 775 mm. All seven districts in the city were inundated by up to 1.5 m.

Authorities had to deploy specialized vehicles, including boats, to evacuate citizens to safer areas.

As of Saturday morning, the rains have stopped and water was receding, but there were still inundations in certain areas.

2,254 power stations in the city lost power, affecting over 200,000 families. Around 71,000 families have seen power restored, while the rest of them, mostly in Son Tra, Hai Chau, Thanh Khe and Hoa Vang districts, were still experiencing blackouts.

Pumps were used to get the water out the basements of apartment buildings. Hundreds of cars, motorbikes and other vehicles were damaged by the water.

Until Sunday, Da Nang is forecast to continue to see rain levels at 80-220 mm. The Vu Gia River and other rivers in the area would see more floods, and flooding and erosion risks would be high in vulnerable areas.
